City of Alpharetta

The city of Alpharetta is steeped in a rich history having its beginning as a small village called New Prospect Camp which served as an Indian trading post housing a few tents and a log school.  The first settlers were drawn to the area by a promise of free Indian lands but were soon followed by farmers and merchants who were the winners of the land lotteries of the 1830's.

In the late 1850's, the camp was recognized by the State of Georgia and was renamed Alpharetta ("alpha" meaning first and "retta" meaning town in Greek).  For the most part, Alpharetta was farming community made up of small, family-owned farms, most of which did not own slaves.  This way of life would prove to be the glue that held the town together through the tough times to come:  a fierce smallpox epidemic in 1863, the Civil War, the depression of the 1930's and the lack of a railroad.  These hard-times drew the hard working folks of Alpharetta together and thus the sense of community began to grow.  Because the area was populated mostly by small farms and merchants, the collapse of Plantations" did not have as devastating an effect as in other communities.

Today, Alpharetta, which is in Fulton County, is one of the fastest growing communities in the South and is considered an ideal place for raising families and escaping the more hectic Atlanta lifestyle.  So many of my friends ve migrated to this exciting and stylish community.  It has become a self-sufficient suburb as you no longer have to commute to Atlanta but have ample opprotunities to live and work in Alpharetta. The city continues to strengthen its sense of community by hosting special events throughout the year to bring residents together.  Check out the City of Alpharetta website for a calendar of events.

The real estate market is thriving in this area, due in no small part to the expansion of GA400, North Point Mall and the birth of mixed-use developments.  Oh, and now the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre!  This is a great place for a concert.
