In 1922 Coca-cola's own Asa Griggs Candler donated 55 rolling acres of parkland to the city of Atlanta, creating the center of the community we now know and love as Candler Park. The eclectic neighborhood surrounding the park is located entirely in DeKalb County and is one of Atlanta's oldest "suburbs". Growing up along the Georgia Railroad tracks, the community was originally founded as Edgewood in 1890. Since that time, the face of the neighborhood has gone through many changes, including being used as a Union camp during the Civil War. In the early 1920's Candler Park was graded to its present level and many of the homes were destroyed forcing the families to relocate. The area suffered a brief decline when the remaining houses were subdivided and rnted by the week. The late 1960's began the upswing that continues today.

As far as architecture goes, Candler Park is notable for its historic residential architecture which is representative of the detached, single-family, middle class housing in Atlanta during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The late-Victorian and Bungalow/Craftsman styles are predominate among the more than one thousand residences in the community, with historic churches, stores and a school to complete the setting. Most of the homes have been renovated creating true showplaces. Candler Park Historic District was listed on the National register of Historic Places in 1983.

ow can you not love Candlr Park? Home to a wide variety of people from talented artists to activists to regular working folks, as well as great shops, laid back bars, its own business district and thriving restaurants (including the famous Flying Biscuit!), of course Candler Park is now one of Atlanta's most sought after in-town nighborhoods. Family-friendly and wakable, residents still sit on their front porches and get to know their neighbors. Located only five minutes east of Atlanta, it is small community living at its best, offering all of the entertainmnt and convenience of the big city. Candler Park even has its own Marta station (Candler Park/Edgewod Station) on DeKalb Avenue!

The park itself features a 9 hole golf course, a swimming pool, a football/soccer field, tennis courts, a playground and a basketball court. The golf course is one of the oldest public golf courses in Atlanta and has affordable rates to cater to the recreational golfer.

Bordering communities are Lake Claire, Inman Park and Druid Hills
